PHTY10110 Introduction to Healthcare Practice

This module is designed to provide the student with a foundation in professional, ethical and health and safety issues. Students receive education in key health and safety principles including infection control and risk assessment. The module also addresses issues including professionalism, the client relationship, confidentiality, ethics and data protection, referencing key legislation and policy documents in these areas. Ethical use of information, plagiarism, evidence based practice and foundation skills in information searching, critical appraisal and writing are also included.

Completion of this module is a pre-requisite for entry to Clinical Placement for students enrolled in the BSc Physiotherapy programme.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will;
1. Understand the scope of physiotherapy practice and the importance of ethical and professional behaviour in clinical practice and research in health, education and community settings
2. Understand ethical use of information
3. Understand the responsibilities of practitioners in relation to legislation governing Statutory Registration, Data Protection, Freedom of Information, Safety, Health and Welfare at Work
4. Understand key principles of risk assessment, health and safety and infection control procedures
6. Know and apply critical appraisal skills.
