PHPS40930 Pract Placement (acute)

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module for MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics students comprises teaching in the acute care practice education placement setting and direct patient management. Students will work in the Health Service under the direction of a Practice Tutor in collaboration with health service staff in a multidisciplinary work environment. The module facilitates reflection, discussion and sharing of placement experiences in the context of evidence-based professional practice. Students will have an opportunity to practise clinical skills learned in the academic setting and to carry out patient assessments and treatments. Each student will complete a Reflective Learning Portfolio during the practice placement.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Achieve the competencies mapped to the CORU domains of professional autonomy and accountability, communication, collaborative practice and teamworking, safety and quality, professional development and professional knowledge and skills as incorporated into the Practice Placement (acute) Assessment Forms
2. Show documentary evidence of undertaking clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice for chosen cases
3. Provide documentary evidence of engaging in reflective practice
4. Show evidence of dietetic activities undertaken
5. Show evidence of initiative in identifying learning needs and availing of learning opportunities available

This module is suitable only for students registered to the MSc Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Programme. Successful completion of the practice education component is required for professional registration.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Formative assessment is provided weekly and more often if required throughout the practice placement. Assessment is competence-based and aligned to professional proficiencies defined by the regulatory body. Students must achieve the competencies described in order to successfully complete the practice placement.
