PHIL10190 Introducing PPE

Academic Year 2024/2025

This module is core for all students enrolled in the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme. Although students will be taking separate modules in all three subjects, this module is designed explicitly to compare and contrast the approaches of the three subjects, to look at the typical questions asked by the three subjects, and the sort of answers sought by the three subjects. The students should discover how knowledge of one subject enhances their knowledge of the other two.

Weeks 2-6 will be taught by a philosopher, Dr. Cowley, and he will be using the central example of work (i.e. jobs and careers). This example raises rich and overlapping questions for all three disciplines. It also raises questions about the small-scale (the role of work in individual people’s lives) and the large-scale (the role of employment policies in a state).

Weeks 7-12 will be taught by an economist, Dr. Yang, and he will be using the central example of international trade. In contrast to the first half, this will be more abstract, and more global. We will look at trade primarily through an economic lens, but it will raise important questions about international and domestic politics, as well as important philosophical questions (e.g. the role of sweatshops).
