The aim of this module is to offer students an introduction into the business considerations around pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries with a particular focus on how regulatory aspects impact business decision-making. The module will use case studies to illustrate basic business concepts, explore theories of innovation, and to explain how pharma and biotechnology firms capture and create value. Students will learn why financial planning is important even if you have a great product or idea, how 'deals' are structured, different exit strategies and how third party or regulatory assessments of products are undertaken. The module will also explore the regulated aspects of health economics and marketing of healthcare products and medicines.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Outline the business environment in which pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies operate

2. Explain the principles that guide the management of these companies

3. Describe the process of drug development from a commercial perspective, outline the risks involved, and how new drug products are marketed

4. Describe regulation of key business activities such as marketing and reimbursement of healthcare products and medicines
