Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Understand the physiological and metabolic demands of exercise and how these influence an athletes nutritional requirements.
2. Understand the nutritional and practical dietary needs of recreational and elite athletes.
3. Appreciate the short- and long-term risks of inappropriate nutrition in relation to exercise and health.
4. Appraise and interpret research design and outcomes pertaining to nutrition strategies in sport.
5. Translate current nutrition guidelines into practical nutrition strategies.
This module will explore the nutritional requirements of athletes before, during, and after training and competition. An understanding of the importance of nutrition for the health and wellbeing of an athlete will be explored, with specific reference to nutrient intake, energy availability, illness, and sleep. Finally, attaining appropriate body composition for performance will be discussed in terms of gaining lean mass, losing fat mass, and making weight for competition.
