This 6 week module is designed to build on the paediatric history taking and knowledge base from previous paediatric experience. The module will introduce students to clinical paediatrics and its underlying pathological mechanisms, the investigation and treatment of these conditions.Paediatrics is a clinical module with very strong emphasis on clinical skills and understanding.Teaching will therefore be largely clinically based in the form of small group clinical sessions, bedside tutorials, clinical demonstrations, self-directed ward based learning and of course traditional lectures which are consultant delivered.The module is delivered between 2 of Dublin's paediatric teaching hospital, namely Children's Health Ireland, Temple Street and Children's Health Ireland, Crumlin. In addition several students will spend time on a peripheral paediatric rotation in one of our affiliated peripheral hospitals. These include Wexford, Mullingar, Waterford, Castlebar and Portlaoise Hospitals. Attendance is mandatory and is a requirement to sit the end of module exam. Should attendance be unsatisfactory, it is at the module coordinator's discretion to insist that the student adequately attends BEFORE taking the exam. Any missed time must be remediated.

Professionalism is integral to and will be assessed throughout the module. Any behavior which is considered to be in breach of professional behavior will be formally noted. This forms part of the ‘must pass’ component of the assessment.
Any behaviour which is considered to be in breach of professional behaviour as set out in the School's Statement on Fitness to Practice (in addition to the University's policy) will be formally noted. Unprofessional behavior may result in the student not being permitted to sit the assessment.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the paediatric rotation, you should;1. Be fully competent at taking a paediatric history from the patient and/or carer. This relies on demonstrating an ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with paediatric patients and their parents.2. Be competent in paediatric physical examination.3. Have acquired a sufficient depth of paediatric theoretical knowledge to allow you to interpret the clinical history and clinical findings on physical examination 4. Be able to formulate a basic management plan for your patient by combining acquired theoretical and practical knowledge. 5. Demonstrate ability to present paediatric clinical cases using the above skills. 5.Understand the importance of and demonstrate professional behaviour in the clinical setting to patients, parents and colleagues.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Paed 40120 is a clinical module.
Approaches to teaching include
Lectures delivered by consultant paediatricians, Interactive large and small group case based teaching, bedside tutorials, clinical team attachments and observerships, case based presentations, clinical examination demonstration, simulation based teaching, the completion of a reflective journal.
The assessment will maintain its clinical focus and will consist of a clinical examination.

Learning Requirements:

Students will not be registered to modules in stage 5 Medicine BHMED001 or Stage 3 Graduate Entry to Medicine BHMED007 unless all preceding stages in their entirety have been successfully completed.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

As the module is clinically based a lot of teaching is delivered at the bedside to small groups, there are consistent opportunities for both group and individual feedback - this is informal. However if based on their performance at these small group sessions, a student is deemed to need extra teaching, this is communicated directly to the student and remediation is arranged. All students present a clinical case to their group of peers and written peer to peer feedback as well as formal feedback form the facilitator are given. Individual requests for feedback are dealt with on a case by case basis and a meeting with the module coordinator can be arranged to discuss if requested. *Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this may be subject to change*
