OSH40130 Dissertation (Occupational Safety and Health)

This module facilitates students to plan, implement and write up a research project on an approved OSH topic in compliance with best practice guidance in ethics and research. Research integrity certification is provided in the first trimester and all students must complete the certification process by the end of the first trimester.

Students will design, plan and implement a minor, original research project, which will normally include (i) identifying a literature-based need for the project, (ii) describing and providing the rationale for the study design and methodology, (iii) managing and analysing data, (iv) presenting a comprehensive discussion of results, through completion of a written report documenting the research context, process, results, findings and implications. In exceptional circumstances individual students may complete an equivalent project.

Learning Outcomes:

In order to complete this module students must be able to show that they can:

-Design, plan, implement and write-up a professional dissertation / report on a discrete original quantitative project addressing a research gap in the area of occupational safety and health, demonstrating a sound knowledge of relevant subject theoretical literature and of the research process to justify the project rationale, study design, methodology and findings.

-Write a dissertation / project, or a journal article suitable for publication, in compliance with UCD policy and guidelines and academic convention, including structure, professionalism, and recognised referencing systems.

Indicative Module Content:

As a student, you will start this year-long module by exploring and writing up a literature base for your research. You'll attend tutorial sessions in the Autumn trimester to explore, consider and consolidate your project plan and to prepare your proposal / application for ethical approval (or exemption from full ethical approval) while concurrently attending a co-requisite Research Methods module.

Research integrity certification is incorporated into the module in advance of ethical approval processes.

The ethical approval process is an important step that is evaluated by the School Taught Masters Research Ethics Committee and without approval the masters thesis cannot proceed.

During the Spring and Summer trimesters you will operationalise and implement your proposal, collect, cleanse and /or and analyse data under supervision, and write a dissertation or equivalent body of writing on your work.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The teaching and learning approaches used will include: active/task-based learning; peer and group work and feedback; tutorials; critical writing; case-based learning, student presentations and critique sessions, and engagement in a supervisor-supervisee working arrangement.
