This module addresses the effects of work on health and enables students to identify risks to health in the workplace, and to advise management on methods to investigate and reduce the risk and the incidence of occupational ill health. Occupational disease identification and prevention, health surveillance and management, rehabilitation and workplace health promotion are addressed.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module students will be able to:

Demonstrate how occupational health fits into national health and safety management and public health strategies.

Identify hazards that can lead to occupational ill health and apply the hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control and management process to occupational health hazards.

Analyse how occurrences of occupational ill health can be identified and how they should be managed.

Advise management on methods to reduce the risk of occupational ill health (controls).

The learning outcomes of this module are consistent with achieving the objectives of SDG 3 Good Health and SDG 8 Decent Work from an occupational health and wellbeing perspective.

Be able to recommend occupational health strategies appropriate to mitigate health risks including health screening, health surveillance, absence management and employee assistance and workplace health promotion programmes.

Identify when to call in specialist expertise, and explain how occupational health professionals interact with other multidisciplinary team members including safety and welfare professionals.

Learning Requirements:

Students must be aged over 23 years, be employed and have at least 3 years work experience. This module contains work-based assessment and if students are not working, they will be unable to meet the credit requirements.

Learning Recommendations:

Students should be engaged in OSH in their workplace.

Student will receive a provisional individual grade in Brightspace within 20 working days of the submission date of the assignment (A, B, C etc. as per UCD grade descriptors).
