Academic Year 2023/2024

This module provides a focused clinical practicum experience within an academic framework for nurses undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Primary Care Nursing Practice. Working within their scope of professional practice, nurses will undertake a period of structured clinical practice in a primary care setting under the guidance and supervision of an academic and clinical preceptor. The focus is on developing a participative person-centered approach in the provision of care. The module will incorporate the development of evidence-informed competencies, as demonstrated through formal direct and indirect assessment of practice.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competency in the six domains outlined in the CCAT by achieving clinical objectives.

2. Demonstrate engagement with the three concepts of quality, safety and leadership in clinical practice.

3. Demonstrate the ability to expand, connect and coordinate care as part of the primary care framework.

4. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to make a difference in primary health care aligned with Sláintecare principles

5. Understand the impact of errors, patient harm and the underlying causes of errors, and assume responsibility for safety in the clinical environment.

6. Demonstrated competency in mandatory and elective clinical skills

7. Demonstrate how professional competence will be demonstrated on an ongoing basis.

Indicative Module Content:

Clinical Practicum
Clinical Practice in a primary care setting (at least 78 hours per month)
Supernumerary Clinical exposures (30 hours) as per student clinical learning needs
