This module explores leadership, quality improvement, governance and collaborative practice. The module introduces and further develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes of healthcare professionals in the context of clinical governance with specific emphases on leadership theory and skills, inter-organisational partnership and frameworks, the concepts of participation and principles of collaboration, team building and understanding individual and organisational change. Students explore motivational models, performance appraisal systems and approaches to managing conflict. Clinical leadership and models of change management and the use of action research, action learning sets, appreciative inquiry are also explored. During the module the students will examine the concepts of practice development and work improvement initiatives. Team building and related concepts and understanding individual and organisational change and how to implement change successfully are also achieved. Issues in relation to quality improvement and patient safety will also be addressed in the context of advanced nursing practice.

1. Compare frameworks for partnership, quality and governance in different health care contexts including role change and collaborative practice
2. Compare and contrast different leadership theories and apply these to practice settings
3. Evaluate quality improvement models and strategies and their application to effective management and quality improvement at individual and organisational levels
4. Discuss a variety of approaches to practice development in your area.
5. Understand different leadership theories
6. Apply theoretical model (s) for the management of conflict and organisational change
7. Appreciate the importance of developing self confidence for leadership roles such as presentation skills and working as part of a group

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module takes a problem based approached to student learning. A blended learning strategy is used with students encouraged to undertake reading of relevant core and journal texts. Formal content is provided by relevant experts in the field of leadership.
