Indicative Module Description: The aim of this module is to enable midwifery practitioners to engage in a critical review of ther decision-making in midwfery practice. Key concepts that will be explored incude, autonomy, relational decision-making, shared decison-making, organisational cultures and systems of care and decison-making. Models and frameworks for decision-making will be explored along with the evidence reporting the factors that enhance or inhibit midwife's ability to make effective decisions in midwifry practice The different sources of knowledge which influence midwifery practice will be examined along with the challenges to decision making. Midwives decision making relating to the normalisation of birth will be explored. Students will also explore the nature of professional judgement and the concepts of partnership and consensus decision-making in the delivery of woman-centred care. From the outset students will be encouraged to critically explore their own philosophy of midwifery care and identify how this influences their clinical decision making processes.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Analytically explore theories of decision-making and identify the factors that affect the midwife’s ability to make effective decisions.
2. Understand the role of Autonomy – particularly the theories and evidence relating to
-Relational autonomy/ and the influences on decision-making theory
3.Critically explore the role of the woman as decision maker in her own care
Including the concepts of Informed choice/ intuition and the relevant evidence – International perspectives.
4.Judiciously explore the evidence pertaining to shared decision-making in Midwifery Practice and Contemporary Maternity Care
5. Understand midwives approaches to decision-making- the evidence and debates from contemporary literature.
6. Understand and critique the complexities and constraints that influence decision-making in midwifery practice
7. Critique and synthesise the evidence pertaining to decision making related to advanced midwifery practice.
8. Understand the importance of the concepts of Women centred care and Leadership for effective decision-making in midwifery Practice.
