This module is based on the curriculum developed by The Heart Failure Association & Council of Nursing & Allied Professionals of the European Society of Cardiology. It aims to focuses on the role of the nurse in the care of persons with heart failure and provides participants with structured learning experiences to advance their knowledge and clinical skills in the area. The programme is based on a holistic view of the patient throughout the continuum of care. The nurse will also gain insight into the role of the nurse as an independent member of the heart failure team, within the primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the student will be able to:
• Demonstrate the knowledge required to perform a full assessment of a patient with chronic heart failure, including health history taking, physiological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual assessment.
• Critically discuss the causes of chronic heart failure, its natural history, prevention, diagnosis and diagnostic modalities including evidence based pharmacological, non-pharmacological therapy, devices and surgery.
• Critically discuss quality of life and psychosocial needs in conjunction with members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Critically discuss the role of the nurse in relation to the stages of heart failure, palliative care and end of life care.
• Critically discuss the role of the nurse within the multidisciplinary tam in the heart failure setting incorporating primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is an online module. There is one scheduled contact day at St. Vincent’s University
Hospital to meet the Multidisciplinary Heart Failure

This course is designed to facilitate growth and development towards continuing
education in the specialty of Heart Failure. The curriculum framework is based on Biggs and
Tang (2011) constructive alignment theory. This educational framework is designed to
incorporate multiple modes of learning to assist you achieve the learning outcomes of the
Professional Certificate in Heart Failure Nursing.

There are a number of shared knowledge forums throughout the module. The purpose is to
share knowledge for all course participants. Participation and contribution are strongly
encouraged and marks awarded for sharing materials and knowledge.

Assessments include online interactive case study and a poster presentation of a heart failure clinical case incorporating nursing diagnosis

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students complete online quizz during completion of online learning. Feedback is provided online during interactive case discussion and on completion individual feedback is given to individual students. Students are required to complete a self-assessment of their poster presentation in the clinical areas Students are also required to provide a critical analysis in a peer review process
