Academic Year 2023/2024

This module aims to increase the emergency nurse's understanding of the nursing assessment parameters for the person who presents with an acute traumatic injury to the emergency department. The module will focus on the principles of major trauma life support and acute life-threatening events, assessment and management of major head injuries, facial injuries, spinal injuries, thoracic injuries, abdominal injuries and acute abdomen, burns, shock and major haemorrhage. 2. Demonstrate the evidence-based approach to the nursing management of patients with a suspected spinal injury in the emergency department.
3. Demonstrate the evidence-based approach to the nursing management of patients with a compromised airway in the emergency department.
4. Demonstrate the role of the emergency nurse in assisting with Rapid Sequence Intubation and the safe, appropriate evidence-based use of all airway adjuncts.
5. Perform a comprehensive evidence-based approach to the nursing assessment and management of the patient presenting to the emergency department with an acute traumatic injury.
6. Appropriately recognise components of the primary and secondary trauma survey, identify and manage impending or actual life threats to the patient and conduct a head-to-toe trauma assessment.

Indicative Module Content:

This module aims to increase the emergency nurse’s knowledge of a wide range of injuries, varying from minor injuries to major, life-threatening conditions. This module will focus on the role of the emergency nurse in relation to the holistic care of the person experiencing trauma to various systems, including the cardiovascular and respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the central nervous system, the musculoskeletal structure and the special senses and neurological conditions. The clinical component is designed to provide the student with clinical opportunities to develop essential skills in caring for the acutely injured person and to optimise care through the application of relevant theory to practice. The principles of effective multidisciplinary teamworking, evidence-based practice and best practice guidelines will underpin the module

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is delivered by blended learning, supported by full-day workshops. Pre-reading and completing short online exercises in advance of each workshop, and active engagement in workshops, are key. The focus is on student-centred approaches that facilitate effective, deep and significant learning. The applied and experiential nature of the module place a premium on student engagement and participation and students are expected to take a lead in discussions and presentations. Students will act as role models for one another as they move through the module. The focus is on assessment as and for learning, as well as of learning and a high degree of reflection is expected.
