NMHS42800 Colorectal Nursing

This module aims to provide you with the relevant critical theory underpinning the nursing and medical assessment and management of patients with colorectal cancer and lower gastrointestinal (GI) disease/disorders. Disease and treatment-related complications pertaining to patients with colorectal cancer and lower GI disease/disorders are also critically examined.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, the student will be able to:

Critically discuss the clinical presentation of colorectal, liver and pancreatic cancer.
Critically analyse the most recent evidence related to colorectal cancer screening.
Critically discuss the diagnosis and treatment of malignant and benign lower GI conditions.
Critically evaluate specific evidence-based assessment and management strategies (nursing and medical) used for the most common disease (lower GI cancer/benign conditions) and treatment-related complications.
Critically appraise the specialist nursing role in relation to the provision of support (physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and informational) for PABC (lower GI cancers) and benign colorectal conditions including referral to hospital and credible community-based support services in this context.

*PABC: those at high risk of developing cancer, patients, cancer survivors, families/significant others.

Indicative Module Content:

The clinical presentation of lower GI cancers and benign lower GI cancers conditions.
The workup and diagnosis of lower GI cancers and benign lower GI conditions.
The treatments used for treating early, locally advanced and lower GI cancers.
Complications of lower GI cancers (disease and treatment-related).
Assessment and management of the complications of lower GI cancers.
Nursing interventions related to the complications of lower GI cancers in the context of patient centred care.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Completion of level 8 (UCD 3) modules or equivalent (Consideration of application for prior experiential learning (RPEL) if no degree)

•Registration with NMBI as a Registered General Nurse (RGN)
•Minimum of one year’s experience in colorectal nursing
• Must work a minimum of 75 hours per month in a cancer unit or related cancer setting (caring for patients with colorectal cancer) prior to commencing, and for the duration of the programme.


Module Requisites and Incompatibles
Additional Information:
NMHS42800 and NMHS42530 should normally be undertaken in the same trimester as part of the Colorectal Nursing strand. The only exception is where a student has already successfully completed one module but has to repeat the other module.
