NMHS42780 Nursing Care of the Chronically Critically Ill Patient

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module focuses the student on exploring the impact of critical illness on both the patient and family. It encourages the student to critically review the environmental, physical and psychological factors that can aid or impact the patients’ recovery.

The student will be required to draw on the Careful Nursing Philosophy and Professional Practice Module as a framework of practice that allows the student to articulate nursing excellence when caring for the chronically critically ill patient.
Palliative and end of life care will are addressed utilising best practice guidelines.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse the trajectory of illness and recovery for the chronically critically ill person and their family.
2. Critically evaluate innovations to address the communication needs of the critically ill person and their families.
3. Critically discuss the principles of supporting the person and family decision making regarding complex acute and chronic illness treatment decisions, end of life care, and organ donation.
4. Critically evaluate how the Careful Nursing Philosophy and Professional Practice Module facilitates excellence in critical care
nursing.
5. Critically discuss the evidence underpinning the value of collaborative family involvement in patient recovery.
