The aim of this module is to advance the student's knowledge and understanding of best, evidence-based care of the acutely-ill child and adolescent presenting to the Children's Emergency department.
It is focused on the the comprehensive care of the child and adolescent presenting to ED with an alteration in function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, or neurological systems.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
Apply prior knowledge of pathophysiology in the assessment of the acutely ill child.
Adopt a systematic approach to the nursing assessment and care of the child and his/her family.
Initiate an evidence-based plan-of-care for the acutely ill child.
Identify and initiate appropriate treatment modalities for the acutely ill child. Identify and discuss monitoring and diagnostic care in the Children's ED environment and relate this to the individual nurse's level of responsibility and accountability.
Demonstrate a keen awareness of the importance of psychosocial factors in caring for the acutely ill child and his/her family.

Indicative Module Content:

This module aims to increase the children’s emergency nurse’s knowledge of the optimal care of the baby/infant/child/adolescent presenting with a wide range of illnesses - varying from a minor illness, to a major, life-threatening condition;
This module focuses on the role of the children’s emergency nurse in care of the child with an acute alteration in function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, or neurological systems;
The clinical component is designed to provide the student with clinical learning opportunities to develop essential skills in caring for the acutely ill child and his/her family, and to optimize this care through the application of relevant theory to practice;
The principles of best, evidence-based practice and multidisciplinary team working are actively promoted

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This Module facilitates the Student to demonstrate superior professional knowledge, skills, and values in care of the child presenting with an acute illness, including - advanced initial assessment, critical analysis, clinical decision making and communication skills;
2. This Module facilitates the Student to critically apply defined relevant essential skills and competencies;
3. This Module facilitates the Student to demonstrate best practice in triage, in line with the Irish Children’s Triage Guidelines (2014);
3. This Module facilitates the Student to articulate a constructive sense of professional awareness, commitment, responsibility, accountability and interdisciplinary team working, in delivering optimum ED care.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Registered with An Bord Altranais as a Registered Children's Nurse or General Nurse.
Minimum of one year experience in paediatric nursing.
Currently and for duration of module, employed in paediatric emergency department.
