Indicative Module Description:
This module explores organisational dynamics in relation to inter-professional working in organisations. This module introduces and further develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes of healthcare professionals, with in-depth knowledge of leadership theory and introduces the concept of “leaderful practice.” which calls for the co-creation of a community of practice by all who are involved interdependently in leadership development. Partnership principles, frameworks for partnership, and coaching from theoretical and practical perspectives are explored. An understanding of the concepts of participation, collaboration in the context of clinical governance is provided. Team building, performance appraisal and related concepts and understanding individual and organisational change and how to implement change successfully are also achieved. Examining motivational theory, managing conflict and examining performance improvement approaches such as appreciative inquiry are also introduced and further developed. Clinical Leadership and models of change management and the use of action research are also explored. The concepts of work improvement, practice development, organisational culture and change initiatives are explored. Feedback on students’ progress will be provided throughout the module.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion the candidate will be able to:
1. Understand different leadership theories
2. Appreciate the importance of developing self confidence for leadership roles such as presentation skills and working as part of a group
3. Use a frameworks for partnership in the context of the inter-professional healthcare team
4. Appreciate organisational culture and the role of group dynamics within an organisation
5. Compare and contrast different motivational theories and apply these to practice settings
6. Analyse the components of undertaking effective performance appraisal in the workplace
7. Apply theoretical model (s) for the management of conflict and organisational change
8. Use an action research approach to assist their leadership role in both creating the need for change and implementing change in their own organisation
9. Have an understanding of the leader as coach in healthcare contexts

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is based on student centred learning . A blended learning approach is used with the students having to engage much reading and also with involved in discussions on work based project learning. Some formal lecture content is also provided which may be face to face or virtual and experts in the area of leadership content are also invited to provide some lecture content and groups sessions in the classroom.
