The Radiology Nursing Course is designed to provide the participant with the core nursing knowledge, skills, and understanding of evidence-based practice and principles which are required to safely, professionally and holistically care for patients undergoing radiological procedures. On completion of the course, the participant will be able to demonstrate her/his role in relation to patient-centredness, patient safety, professional accountability and the need for effective communication with patients and all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the Course, the participant will be able to:
1. Appraise the knowledge, skills and understanding required to provide optimal and safe nursing care for patients before, during, and after radiological procedures.
2. Establish the nurse’s role in relation to intravenous procedural sedation and analgesia and the protocols, assessment and monitoring tools used.
3. The nurse appraises the principles of prioritisation in the event of adverse events such contrast medium reactions resulting in extravasation, allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.
4. Examine the principles of radiation safety, aseptic technique, infection prevention and control, and decontamination priorities in relation to both staff and patients in the Radiology Department.
5. Focus on applying the principles of effective communication, patient safety and professional accountability in the provision of holistic, patient-centred care in the Radiology Department, and discover the nurse’s role.

Indicative Module Content:

Optimal and safe nursing care for patients before, during, and after radiological procedures.
Nurse’s role in relation to intravenous procedural sedation and analgesia and the protocols, assessment and monitoring tools used.
The principles of prioritisation in the event of adverse events such contrast medium reactions resulting in extravasation, allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.
The principles of radiation safety, aseptic technique, infection prevention and control, and decontamination priorities in relation to both staff and patients in the Radiology Department.

Learning Requirements:

Must be a Registered General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
 Must be employed at St. Vincent’s University Hospital
 Must be working in the Radiology Department for the duration of the course
 Must have access to a personal computer or laptop
 Must have basic information and communication technology (ICT) skills
 Basic Life Support

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Course Coordinator gives feedforward by providing suggestions and guidelines for the participant on how to complete the final assessment, and where relevant, drafts of this assessment may be submitted for review and feedback 3-4 weeks prior to final submission, at a time specified by the Course Coordinator. In terms of clinical practice, participants are given feedback by the clinical assessor, and if applicable, a Personal Competency Development Plan (Higgins et al., 2010) is agreed to support and focus the participant improve performance in relevant clinical competency/competencies. This encompasses identifying the competencies and behavioural indications, actions to be taken to achieve desired competency level, and evidence of achievement, with review date.
