NMHS33860 Dermatology CPD

This course aims to advance each participant’s body of knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to enable them to adopt a safe, therapeutic and holistic response to the care of the patient who requires minor dermatology surgery. It has been designed to guide dermatology nurses, working in any area of practice, to provide high quality nursing care to patients manifesting aspects of dermatology disease. Throughout the course, the participant will be afforded the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to link theory with practice and to demonstrate clinical competency in a number of surgical skills in the Dermatology Department. It is expected that on course completion that the participant will be able to carry out a number of minor surgical skills for the dermatology service within the hospital.

Learning Outcomes:

The learning outcomes for this course are on completion of this CPD course, the nurse will be able to:
1. Perform basic surgical procedures in the dermatology setting.
2. Co-ordinate nursing care through the patient journey and provide psychological support to the patient
3. Provide information for patients on the treatment and management of skin conditions and demonstrate skin care so as to support self-management where possible
4. Participate in skin cancer support and surveillance services

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Must be Registered General Nurses with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
 Must be employed at St. Vincent’s University Hospital
 Must be working in the Dermatology Department (The Charles Centre for Dermatology) for the duration of the course
 Must have access to a personal computer or laptop
 Must have basic information and communication technology (ICT) skills

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Course Coordinator gives feedforward by providing suggestions and guidelines for the participant on how to complete the final assessment, and where relevant, drafts of this assessment may be submitted for review and feedback 3-4 weeks prior to final submission, at a time specified by the Course Coordinator. In terms of clinical practice, participants are given feedback by the clinical assessor, and if applicable, a personal Competency Development Plan (Higgins et al., 2010) is agreed to support and focus the participant improve performance in relevant clinical competency/competencies. This encompasses identifying the competencies and behavioural indications, actions to be taken to achieve desired competency level, and evidence of achievement, with review date.
