The aim of this programme is to further develop the students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable them to effectively deliver safe, evidenced based emergency nursing care to children and their families in the emergency setting.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the Children’s Emergency Foundation Programme the learner will be able to:
• Demonstrate effective emergency nursing care of an injured child.
• Demonstrate effective emergency nursing care of the unwell child.
• Examine the nursing care, in relation to safeguarding, of children who present in the emergency setting.
• Discuss the emergency nursing care of the child with mental health needs.
• Examine and appreciate the effective emergency nursing care of a child who has complex healthcare needs.
• Organise and appreciate the compassionate care of a child and their family following a sudden/unexpected death.
• Demonstrate effective communication skills with children, families, and members of the multidisciplinary team.

Indicative Module Content:

1. Structured approach to trauma.
2. Nursing care of the child with injuries:
• Upper and lower limb injuries
• Accidental ingestions
• Dental injuries
• Burns/thermal injuries
• Ingestion or inhalation of foreign body
3. Nursing care of the child with major trauma.
4. Nursing care of the child with a head injury
5. Care of the child on spinal precautions requiring manual inline stabilisation.
6. Care of the child requiring transfer to another department hospital.
7. Communicating with children, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
8. Values of nursing compassion, care, and commitment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Registered in General/Children’s nursing and must be currently registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
 Deemed suitable to undertake the programme by their Clinical Nurse Manager/ Clinical Nurse Education Facilitator.
 Nurses employed in paediatric emergency setting for a minimum of 16 weeks before commencing the programme.
 Nurses must have an up-to-date Basic Life Support course completed. Have attended; Child Protection Awareness Training, Intravenous Therapy Management and Medication Safety Management programmes.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Participants receive individual feedback on their progress and academic work. If a participant has any concerns about their grades, requests for additional feedback should be made in writing to the nurse tutor in the CCNE within two weeks of publication of results. The purpose of assessment in this programme is to give structured feedback to learners and capture what they have learnt, understood, and can apply to their nursing practice. The programme coordinator will provide ongoing and timely feedback and feedforward in a positive and encouraging manner for both theoretical and clinical assessments.
