Indicative Learning Description
The module content will provide a strong theoretical and practical grounding that will enable students to develop the necessary skills & knowledge in the provision of midwifery care to critically ill women who experience complications in pregnancy, labour and puerperium while also providing midwifery care for women with Obstetric Emergencies.
A particular focus of this module is the consideration given by the student midwife to the complexities of caring for women who experience significant obstetric emergencies, the key role played by midwives in the recognition of emergency situations, and in the initiation of appropriate treatment modalities. With the development of community midwifery services, the pivotal role played by midwives in the provision of skilled emergency care in the absence of immediate obstetric assistance is addressed.
The distinctive contribution of midwifery care in the context of the multidisciplinary team is identified, and developments in the scope of midwifery practice in the care of women with complications in childbearing are explored. Key values of midwifery care such as partnership, holism individualisation, and the importance of evidence-based midwifery care underpins the application of this module content to practice. Relevant medication management will be incorporated throughout the module. This module is not passable by compensation.

Indicative Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, the student will be able to

• Examine the midwife’s role and responsibilities in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of the Critically Ill women
experiencing complications in pregnancy, labour delivery and puerperium.
• Discuss the underlying pathophysiology of Obstetric Emergencies.
• Illustrate the midwifery specific care and management in the care of the Critically ill woman.
• Diagnose and initiate effective treatment for women experiencing emergency situations, which may jeopardise the life and/
or well-being of the mother, fetus or both, in the hospital and community setting.
• Provide rationale for the care and management of women experiencing complications, with reference to best available
evidence.
• Integrate effective record keeping strategies in the provision of high-quality midwifery care, giving consideration of record
keeping in emergency situations.
• Critically engage with the requirement for continuous professional development and the changing boundaries of midwifery
practice.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Teaching and learning methods focus on practitioner-centred approaches and reflect adult learning principles. Blended learning strategies are complemented by a variety of student-centred methods, such as active learning, and clinical case discussions. Face to face interactive lectures assist in the consolidation of this knowledge.
Teaching methods to enhance clinical competencies are undertaken via instruction in the clinical skills laboratory, using a variety of methods, such as simulation exercises, demonstrations, role play and role modelling. Learning is also promoted by enabling students to reflect on their practice and by providing feedback from observations of their skills by peers and academic staff.
In order to promote learning through reflection on experience, and to promote the integration of theory and practice, case study approaches are also employed.
