On successful completion of the module, the student will be able to
• Examine the midwife’s role and responsibilities in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of the Critically Ill women
experiencing complications in pregnancy, labour delivery and puerperium.
• Discuss the underlying pathophysiology of Obstetric Emergencies.
• Illustrate the midwifery specific care and management in the care of the Critically ill woman.
• Diagnose and initiate effective treatment for women experiencing emergency situations, which may jeopardise the life and/
or well-being of the mother, fetus or both, in the hospital and community setting.
• Provide rationale for the care and management of women experiencing complications, with reference to best available
evidence.
• Integrate effective record keeping strategies in the provision of high-quality midwifery care, giving consideration of record
keeping in emergency situations.
• Critically engage with the requirement for continuous professional development and the changing boundaries of midwifery
practice.
