This module provides students with clinical experience in medical-surgical/specialist child and adult healthcare settings. The module aims to enable students to practice from a proficient knowledge base and deliver safe and effective child and family centred, and person centred nursing care, through the application of a problem solving approach to care delivery under the indirect supervision of the registered nurse. Students will actively participate in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of child and person centred evidenced based nursing care. Students will learn to practice collaboratively with the person, child, young person, family and health care team and learn to practice empathetic communication and interpersonal skills during the delivery of nursing care. Key knowledge and skills include safe and effective assessment of priorities, time management, use of resources and the application of critical thinking and reflection to inform best practice. The module introduces students to professional leadership and scholarship through self-directed learning and questioning and the development of reasoning and decision-making skills to inform practice and life-long professional development. Students will also complete the HSELanD online preceptorship programme to gain an understanding of the principles of preceptorship and models of supervision. The module is part of the essential clinical requirements for professional registration.
Students must complete all Stage 4 & Stage 4.5 clinical hours before status is‘ degree complete’.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate the development of competence in the six domains of competences specified by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (2016):
• Professional Values and conduct of the nurse competences in a medical-surgical setting
• Nursing Practice and clinical decision making competences in a medical-surgical setting Interpersonal Relationships with patients, family and other professionals

• Leadership potential and professional scholarship competences.
• Completion of the preceptorship programme in HSELanD

Learning Requirements:

Student must have successfully completed all stage 3 clinical placement modules.

Student must have successfully completed specified stage 4 supernumerary clinical placement modules before undertaking the internship clinical modules.
