This module introduces two units of study; Health Psychology and the Sociology of Health and Illness.

The content of Health Psychology is situated within a Biopsychosocial Model of Health and its application in clinical practice. Using a framework that includes psychological assessment, the role of psychological support and the self-management interventions will be examined through the lens of the Nursing care delivery. Drawing on positive psychology the importance of compassion, resilience, and reflection to support patient care delivery and professional self-care will be threaded throughout the module.

The content on sociology of health and illness will introduce a select few theories and frameworks. The content aims to expand learners' awareness and analysis of the human social relationships, cultures, and institutions that profoundly continue to shape nursing education and practice. With a focus on social determinants of health the curriculum will highlight the impact on health outcomes and illustrate how understanding sociology of health across a range of individual and group characteristics enables universal, accessible, and equitable healthcare.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will:
• Recognise and respond to the challenges of health care delivery in the context of the Biopsychosocial model of health.
• Understand the key components associated with psychological assessment.
• Critique psychological theories that inform the management of chronic illness in Adults.
• Understand the nature of resilience (personal, interpersonal, and organisational).
• Apply sociological perspectives to understandings of health, illness, and health care delivery.
• Develop a critical and questioning understanding of health, illness, and social dynamics in healthcare.
