This is a blended learning course, which incorporates both online learning units with associated practical workshops and simulated scenarios. It is designed to provide the participant with the required learning and practice opportunities to facilitate the development of nurses who are competent in all the domains of care required to provide safe, effective and holistic care to patients presenting to the AMU.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Structure a systematic holistic assessment of the patient’s needs based on best available evidence.
2. Prioritise and organise care based on need, acuity and recommended timeframes, within the protocols agreed with the MDT.
3. Organise patient related information and communicate this clearly in a structured, timely manner, as a part of the multidisciplinary team representing the patient’s best interest.
4. Integrate the required knowledge and necessary skills to safely care for patients presenting with a range of conditions in acute short stay medical units.
5. Arrange timely nurse facilitated discharge planning in collaboration with the MDT to ensure optimal patient flow and a quality service for patients and their families.
6. Appraise and evaluate patient response to interventions and progress towards expected outcomes, reflect on practice, and implement appropriate changes to care in collaboration with the MDT.

Indicative Module Content:

Evidence-based nursing assessment and management of patients presenting to the AMU.

Learning Requirements:

Must be Registered General Nurses with NMBI
 Must be employed at St. Vincent’s University Hospital
 Muse be working in the AMU for the duration of the course
 Must have access to a personal computer or laptop
 Must have basic information and communication technology (ICT) skills

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Course Coordinator gives feedforward by providing suggestions and guidelines for the participant on how to complete the final assessment, and where relevant, drafts of this assessment may be submitted for review and feedback 3-4 weeks prior to final submission, at a time specified by the Course Coordinator. In terms of clinical practice, participants are given feedback by the clinical assessor, and if applicable, a personal Competency Development Plan (Higgins et al., 2010) is agreed to support and focus the participant improve performance in relevant clinical competency/competencies.
