Students will be provided with opportunities to engage in patient care with increasing responsibility under the supervision of a registered nurse. Students will partake in nursing care as members of the care team with opportunities to apply the skills of critical analysis, problem solving, decision making, and reflection commensurate with this level of training.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to act as a member of the care team and work towards the development of competence in the following domains of competence and:
Display professional values and conduct of nurse competences /knowledge and appreciation of the virtues of caring, compassion, integrity, honesty, respect and empathy as a basis of nursing
Display nursing practice and clinical decision-making competences including understanding and knowledge of the principles of safe, effective and person-centred care delivery based on partnership
Demonstrate knowledge and cognitive competences across all 6 NMBI domains including life, behavioural and health sciences, across the health continuum and with respect for and an awareness of cultural diversity, ethnicity and individual preferences and needs
Apply in practice: communication and interpersonal competences
Demonstrate management and team competences
Display Leadership and professional scholarship competencies including self-directed learning skills, critical questioning /reasoning and maintaining competency

Indicative Module Content:

Students will be provided with opportunities to engage in patient care with increasing responsibility under the supervision of a registered nurse. Students will partake in nursing care as members of the care team with opportunities to apply the skills of critical analysis, problem solving, decision making, and reflection commensurate with this level of training. The credit load of this module reflects the student effort hours required to achieve the learning outcomes.
The student must pass 4B Internship clinical placement before progressing to 4C Internship. Students must complete all Stage 4 clinical hours before status is ‘degree complete’.
Students must complete all Stage 4 clinical hours before reading degree complete.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a practical module focused on clinical practice in care settings with service users.
Students will get to link theory to practice in real-life situations with guidance, support and feedback.
Teaching and learning is thus experiential and guided by practice, skills performance, reflection and discussion.
Competency will be assessed by the student's preceptor using a standardised document.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

All Stage 3 clinical placements and time requirements must be completed and passed, in addition to the successful completion of stage 4 supernumerary clinical placement prior to undertaking the internship modules 4A and 4B

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will have set meetings with their preceptor to establish a learning plan and goals to be met against specific domains and standards and then to evaluate progress against these standards. Feedback will be provided by the preceptor and/or team and via the Clinical Placement Coordinator and documented in the student's portfolio of evidence the NCAD.
