On successful completion of this module students should be able to act as a member of the care team and work towards the development of competence in the following domains and:
o Display professional values and conduct of nurse competences /knowledge and appreciation of the virtues of caring, compassion, integrity, honesty, respect and empathy as a basis of nursing
o Display nursing practice and clinical decision-making competences including understanding and knowledge of the principles of safe, effective and person-centred care delivery based on partnership
o Demonstrate knowledge and cognitive competences across all 6 NMBI domains including life, behavioural and health sciences, across the health continuum and with respect for and an awareness of cultural diversity, ethnicity and individual preferences and needs
o Apply in practice: communication and Interpersonal competences
o Demonstrate management and team competences
o Display leadership and professional scholarship competencies including self-directed learning skills, critical questioning /reasoning and maintaining competency
Indicative Module Description:
The clinical placement element of internship is designed to facilitate the development and consolidation of competencies in all domains of competence. Students will be provided with opportunities to observe and engage in patient care, under the supervision of a registered nurse. Students will partake in nursing care as members of the care team and will be given opportunities to apply the skills of critical analysis, problem solving, decision making, and reflection. The credit load of this module reflects the student effort hours required to achieve the learning outcomes. The student must pass 4A and 4B Internship (MH) clinical placement before progressing to 4C Internship (MH).
Students must complete all Stage 4 clinical hours before reading degree complete.

Students will have set meetings with their preceptor to establish a learning plan and goals to be met against specific domains and standards and then to evaluate progress against these standards. Feedback will be provided by the preceptor and/or team and via the Clinical Placement Coordinator and documented in the student's portfolio of evidence currently the Domains of Competence Assessment Tool DoCAT moving in future years to the National Clinical Assessment Document (NCAD).
