NMHS33460 Pop Hlth Diversity & Research

Academic Year 2020/2021

The overarching framework of this module is Population Health, with Diversity and Research concepts being explored and applied within the framework. Population Health focuses on the interrelated conditions and factors that influence health and wellbeing patterns and outcomes for populations over the life course. It also incorporates the policies and interventions that impact on achieving equitable health and wellbeing for diverse population groups. Diversity explores the existence of variations in people and groups and incorporates cultural competence and characteristics such as cultural background, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, values and religion. Students are exposed to 'insider' perspectives as members of diverse groups provide guest lectures. The module is assessed by a Health and Wellbeing Initiative developed to address an identified population group’s health and wellbeing needs. It requires synthesising principles of population health and diversity. Students are required to critique research that informs the initiative. Additionally students self-reflect and critique personal bias and prejudices that impact on providing professional compassionate care and services to diverse groups.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The content focuses on population health, with diversity and research concepts integrated. Learning material (theoretical frameworks, information and resources) will be presented through online lectures and students will also be required to complete directed activities. Students get an opportunity to meet people from diverse population groups to get insider views and ask people about their experiences and perspectives. They also get an opportunity to meet people who provide services to diverse population groups.
The assessment requires students to work in small groups of 4-5 to construct a Health and Well being initiative for a specified population group where they are required to apply the concepts taught within the module. During the process of constructing the initiative Lecturers provide conversational classes where they are available to the student groups to support them in their application of theory to their assessment task.
