This module introduces students to a specialist and/or surgical-medical care setting, enabling them to observe and, where appropriate, participate in patient care. The module aims to develop students' understanding of how care is care is planned, organised and delivered within the clinical environment. Under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse, students will have opportunities to observe and participate in patient care where appropriate. Students are expected to take a proactive approach to developing their clinical skills, using the NCAD document as a guide and as evidence of clinical performance and competence.

The module may be linked to a range of clinical areas, including care of the older person, emergency department, intellectual disability services, outpatients department, maternity care, community care, mental health and psychiatry nursing, operating theatre, paediatric care* , ICU/HDU, public health nursing and medical-surgical nursing. The credit weighting reflects the student effort required to achieve the learning outcomes.

This module is an essential component of the clinical requirements for professional registration. All individual practice placements must be successfully completed and passed for the module to be awarded a pass grade. All practice placement placements must be passed, and all required clinical hours completed at the current stage, before progression to the next stage of the programme.

* Note
To address the ongoing challenges in accessing practice placements within Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), a hybrid specialist paediatric placement model will support the achievement of paediatric learning outcomes within the clinical module.
The hybrid specialist paediatric placement model will consist of:

-Four days of theoretical instruction delivered via a virtual learning platform, focusing on core paediatric concepts such as child development, family-centred care, safeguarding, acute and chronic illness in children, and paediatric clinical decision-making.

-One full day in the clinical skills laboratory, where students will engage in paediatric-specific skills training, including assessment of the child, medication safety, communication with children and families, and management of common paediatric scenarios.
