NMHS33410 Complexities in Labour & Birth

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module will focus on the most frequently occurring complexities that women may experience during labour and birth. Students completing this module will develop the knowledge and skills required to identify, plan, collaborate and provide care as part of the healthcare team to women who experience complex labour and birth. The psychological impact of adverse outcomes/trauma on women in pregnancy, labour and birth will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Appraise the identification, referral and subsequent evidence based care of women who experience common deviations from
normality during labour and birth
2. Review and apply relevant literature and research in relation to the provision of midwifery care to women experiencing
common deviations during labour and birth
3. Examine the use of technology and interventions for more complicated labours
4. Distinguish how the midwife can promote key concepts in midwifery care when planning and providing care in collaboration
with the health care team
