Indicative Module Description:
This module will focus on examining the most frequently occurring complications that women may experience in pregnancy. The effects of pre-existing medical health disorders on pregnancy will also be explored. This module is designed to enable the student to acquire the knowledge & skills necessary to identify deviation from the norm. The student will gain an understanding of the midwife’s role in the specialised care and management of the women and fetus when these complications emerge. Women’s physical and psychosocial health will also be addressed. The role of the multidisciplinary team will also be incorporated. This module will examine complexities in pregnancy from a personal, national and global perspective. This module is not passable by compensation.

On completion of this module students should be able to:

• Understand the health implications of possible pre-existing medical conditions on
pregnancy.
• Acquire skills and knowledge to recognize the development of pregnancy related
complications.
• Demonstrate the ability to initiate the appropriate specialised midwifery care and
management of women who develop complications during pregnancy.
• Recognise her/his scope of midwifery practice in specialised complex pregnancies and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of prompt multidisciplinary team involvement when these situations arise.
• Understand the effects of social and psychological factors on the pregnancy
experience.

Renal: Cystitis, UTI, Pyelonephritis, Renal failure

Hypertensive disorders: Chronic Hypertension, Gestational hypertension, Pre- Eclampsia, HELLP Hyperemesis

Complications of amniotic fluid: Oligohydramnios & Polyhydramnios

Hepatic Complications: Acute fatty liver, Obstetric Cholestasis,

Haematology: Anaemia, Thalassemia, Sickle Cell, Von Willebrand, Thrombocytopenia

Ultrasonography: Role of ultrasound in specialised high-risk pregnancy

Vascular complications: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) & Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

Neurological complexities: Epilepsy, MS, Peripheral Nerve Disease, Myasthenia Gravis, Headaches and Migraines, CVA

Obesity: Care and Management

RH Factor & RH immunization – Anti D

Breast Pathology

Sepsis/Septicaemia & Septic shock

Clinical Skills:

Hypertensive disorders

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

An oppurtunity is afforded to the student for the Module Coodinator to proof read the assignment and advise areas for improvement e.g writing style, grammar references prior to the submative assessment submission process. Written feedback will be sent individually to each student within two weeks of the assignment submission date. A face to face meeting or phone conversation is also available if required by the student following this.
