The purpose of this module is to enable students to consolidate essential knowledge and skills in the care of chronically ill children, young people and their families. Students will integrate the knowledge and skills required to care for children, young people, and their families with various chronic and complex conditions in the pediatric and community healthcare settings. Students will be given opportunities to develop further their assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the child and family's nursing care needs and examine aspects of care about diagnostics and therapeutics relevant to the treatment modalities discussed. The module will enable students to consolidate essential knowledge and skills in holistic nursing care of the child and family, working individually and as a multidisciplinary team. There are three units, and each unit introduces the student to educational, rehabilitative and health-promotional aspects of child and family-centred care about achieving and maintaining health.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes: On completion, the candidate will be able to:

1. Develop an appreciation of the anatomical and physiological processes throughout Metabolic and Endocrine disorders, Cancer and Altered Immune System disorders.

2. Use child and family-centred care approach and an appropriate model of nursing to critically discuss the nursing assessment of actual/potential problems that may arise in caring for the child/family relevant to conditions within the module

3. Conduct a comprehensive assessment of various clinical cases with a focus on Inherited Metabolic and Endocrine disorders and Cancer & Altered Immune System disorders

4. Critically discuss the holistic nursing interventions and appropriate nursing care principles relevant to the module's units

5. Critically discuss the relevant diagnostic and therapeutic aspects, the child and family's rehabilitative and supportive care needs, and the services available or required within the hospital or the community.

Indicative Module Content:

There are three units, and each unit introduces the student to educational, rehabilitative and health-promotional aspects of child and family-centred care about achieving and maintaining health.

Unit 1: Care of the infant, child or young person with Inherited Metabolic Disorders
Unit 2: Care of the infant, child or young person with Endocrine disorders
Unit 3: Care of the infant, child or young person with Cancer & Altered Immune System disorders

A case study approach using exemplars within each unit is presented and discussed, utilising a child and family-centred care approach.
