Indicative Module Description: This Module is designed to enhance student’s specialist theoretical knowledge and clinical practice skills in the delivery of nursing care to patients in the acute phase of surgical intervention. The module aims to facilitate the student to examine the evidence that underpins acute surgical nursing practices, enhance their ability to assess patients, advance their clinical decision making and plan holistic care. Additionally, the module emphasizes the importance of professional development, focusing on patient safety, accountability, and effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module the student will:
1. Extend specialist surgical theoretical knowledge in the identification of risk factors, method of injury, illness and complications that can impact the physiology and recovery of the surgical patient.
2. Conduct a systematic and focused nursing assessment and extend clinical decision making ability by analysis of patient assessment data.
3. Critically analyse acute alterations in the condition of the acute surgical patient and respond appropriately to develop a plan of nursing care that incorporates best available evidence and guidelines.
4. Demonstrate an ability to provide optimal pre operative and post operative patient care that facilitates recovery and discharge in a timely manner including patient education in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team in line with the National Clinical Programme for Surgery
5. Utilise the principles of effective communication, patient safety and professional accountability in the provision of patient centred care.

Learning Requirements:

The Acute Surgical Nursing CPD programme is open to nurses currently registered with NMBI in the general division and who have achieved a minimum of 6 months recent post registration surgical clinical practice. The nurse must be employed in a unit caring for surgical patients in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. Students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours per month of clinical practice experience over the duration of the module (20 weeks).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students shall receive feedback on all assessments associated with the Acute Surgical Nursing CPD programme. The purpose of feedback is the promotion of learning for the student. Feedback should be clear, understandable and be structured around goals, criteria and standards. Feedback can be in oral or written form, formal or informal. Students are responsible for engaging with feedback and applying consideration to the feedback given on their work. Feedback shall be given no later than twenty working days after the deadline for assessment submission, except work that is submitted late.
