NMHS33160 Nursing a Person in the Medical Environment

This course is designed to equip registered nurses with current evidence based knowledge and skills for application to both general medical and specific specialist medical patient care contexts. This course aims to challenge participants to think critically and creatively about patient care. It allows the participant to reflect on the clinical contribution that general medical nursing can make to positive patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Establish a nursing diagnosis and determine specific nursing care plans for individual patients

2. Take part in assessment, reasoning and patient management skills in relation to systematic examination of the general medical patient

3. Highlight the need to enhance nursing practice through the application of well assimilated knowledge/clinical skills within general and specific medical contexts

4. Prioritise appropriate and safe nursing care for the medical patient with cognitive impairment and general functional decline

5. Contribute as a valuable member of the MDT in the delivery of quality, compassionate healthcare to patients/families being cognisant of clinical/professional boundaries

Learning Requirements:

• Must be Registered General Nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
• Must be employed at St. Vincent's University Hospital
• Must be working in one of the designated medical ward areas in SVUH for the duration of the course

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Course Coordinator gives feedforward by providing suggestions and guidelines for the participant on how to complete the final assessments. Participants receive individual feedback on their progress and academic work. Participants are encouraged to seek additional feedback for grades that are in dispute. In the event that the outcome of this feedback is unsatisfactory, the participant may request additional feedback with the Director of Nurse Education and Practice Development (DONE&PD), in the Nurse Education Centre.
