Academic Year 2021/2022

This module introduces the student to professional, ethical and legal rules and regulations that informs safe and effective nurse-midwife prescribing practice. The following issues are critiqued in the context of quality safe nurse-midwife prescribing: legal aspects of prescription writing and calculation skills, the prescribing process and consultation skills, medication management (i.e. reconciliation, clinical medication review, optimization), prescribing errors, drug interactions and adverse reactions. Governance issues such as clinical audit, collaboration, scope of practice and CPD are also addressed.

Learning Outcomes:

Discuss primary medicines legislation, associated statutory instruments, regulations and rules that provide for the prescriptive authority of nurses and midwives
Critically discuss professional regulations, policies, standards and frameworks that support the implementation, practice, governance and evaluation of nurse-midwife prescribing
Critically analyse relevant moral theory and bio-ethical principles that inform decision-making in prescribing practice
Discuss the importance of maintaining professional responsibility and accountability in the context of medication safety and safe prescribing practice
Evaluate the effectiveness of different prescribing consultation-communication models in achieving compliance
Explain how effective consultation skills in tandem with a comprehensive health assessment (i.e. history taking, physical examination, medication reconciliation/review, promotion of concordance, engaging in shared decision making with the patient and multidisciplinary team, analyzing the benefits and/or harm of a medication for the individual patient ) reduces the incidence of non-compliance, prescribing errors and adverse drug reactions/ interactions.
Demonstrate numerical skills for safe prescribing
Discuss the benefits of collaboration with members of the MDT prescribing team for both patients and prescribers
Discuss the importance of clinical governance and clinical audit as key strategies for quality safe prescribing practice
Reflect on self and others in the context of prescribing practice and negotiate the appropriate level of support and supervision needed for safe prescribing practice
Recognize the importance of continuous professional development in maintaining safe and effective prescribing practice

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Theoretical content is delivered online via zoom in Brightspace (UCDs virtual learning environment). Some classes will be live online and some will be recorded. All live online lectures are delivered on a Wednesday. Continuous assessment is used as a strategy to keep students engaged and up to date with online learning materials. Students are provided with access to key reading resources and are expected to read and research broadly around key topics.

Students engage in peer review and feedback via the discussion forum assignment. Students receive automatic feedback on MCQs post assessment.
