The aim of the module is to introduce the student to clinical midwifery practice. The module emphasises the importance of critically and effectively applying theory to practice, utilising best evidence for practice, in the provision of safe and effective care. Students participate with the midwife in the provision of kind, compassionate and respectful midwifery care for women and their babies. The student is provided with an opportunity to apply under direct supervision of a registered midwife, theory and skills previously learned in the classroom and clinical skills laboratory, to the care of woman and baby during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period.

About this Module

On completion of this clinical module students should be able to:

Discuss the role and philosophy of midwifery and its application to practice across the spectrum of midwifery care (antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal).

Incorporate professional standards of clinical practice and professional conduct.

Discuss basic concepts involved in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of midwifery practice.

Through reflection demonstrate a cognisance of their own abilities and limitations working under supervision of preceptors to address areas for improvement.

Begin to work as a member of the multidisciplinary team demonstrating an awareness of the scope of midwifery and student midwife practice.

Begin to understand the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to organise prioritise and co-ordinate midwifery care.

Demonstrate the ability to communicate appropriately, with preceptor and other members of the multidisciplinary team including verbal, nonverbal, and writing skills.

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, on an activity or draft prior to summative assessment
• Feedback individually to students, post-assessment

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students are provided both formal and informal feedback by their preceptors at intervals throughout the clinical placement. Where a student is having significant difficulties in meeting standards during a clinical placement or, where a student is unsuccessful in their clinical assessment then a protocol is enacted. This protocol outlines the events and actions that should take place in these circumstances and this includes details relating to providing feedback.
