NMHS33020 Professional Midwifery Practice

Unit 1 provides a comprehensive overview of the professional, legal and ethical issues surrounding midwifery practice. The history and regulation of midwifery practice in Ireland will be examined. The professional identity and role of the midwife will be explored. The importance of ongoing personal and professional development including continuous professional and personal development. The importance of lifelong learning and reflective practice will be critically evaluated as well as the role of information technology in modern maternity practice. The ethical underpinnings for the practice of midwifery and the legal context in which midwifery and maternity care is also examined. Key concepts related to ethics include: respect for autonomy, non-maleficence and justice consent and refusal of consent, confidentiality and truth telling. The key legal principles and issues relating to midwifery and maternity care will be examined

Unit 2 considers the role of patient safety and quality in midwifery and maternity care. Principles of patient safety and clinical risk management will be explored. An examination of enquiries into maternity care in Ireland and internationally will be undertaken and the lessons learned in terms of patient safety and quality will be discussed. The module content will examine specific issues such as quality assurance, clinical governance and the importance of effective communication. Students will also learn how to undertake a clinical audit.

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Unit 1:
Demonstrate an awareness of the legislation, historical and current, which regulates midwifery in Ireland;

Appraise the implications of the concepts of accountability and autonomy for midwifery practice

Identify the role of midwives and the scope of practice of midwives in the Irish maternity services

Define the fundamental principles associated with the ethical and legal aspects of midwifery practice.

Discuss legal issues that may be encountered in caring for women and their families.

Recognise legislation which impacts on the provision of maternity services and midwifery care.

Appraise the implications of the concepts of informed choice, confidentiality, informed consent, agency accountability and autonomy for midwifery practice.

Unit 2:
Demonstrate an understanding of patient safety principles and how they apply to maternity services.

Demonstrate an understanding of clinical risk management principles and how they apply to maternity services.

Evaluate the quality assurance procedures in maternity care within Ireland, with particular reference to clinical governance mechanisms.
