NMHS32980 Clinical Practice C (HDM)

This module aims to deepen the students' experience and clinical skills in the provision of evidence-based, midwifery care whether in pregnancy, labour or postnatal period. This module builds on the student’s previous experience of midwifery from Clinical Practice B. The aim of this module is to scaffold learning and develop the student’s reflexive and critical thinking skills in the way that care is assessed, planned, implemented and evaluated. This clinical module will enable the student to work towards taking the lead in providing care under the indirect supervision of the midwife. The module also provides students with the opportunity to critically apply knowledge, skills and attitudes gained in its related theory module on the complexities of pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period, under the supervision of experienced midwives, to the development of safe and effective midwifery plans, and to critically evaluate the midwifery role in the provision of midwifery care for women experiencing such complications, in partnership with women, their families and the interdisciplinary team.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this clinical module the student should be able to:

Actively participate under the indirect supervision of the midwife in assessing, planning, organising, implementing and evaluating the provision of safe and evidence-based care for a caseload of women and their babies and be able to provide a rationale for this.

Participate with the midwife in the assessing, planning, organising, implementing and evaluation of safe and evidence-based care to women experiencing a complex pregnancy, labour, birth or postnatal period

Work in partnership with the woman and her family and establish relationship of trust and confidentiality

Demonstrate holistic approaches to care and integration of knowledge in midwifery care setting.

Communicate and collaborate with women, women’s families and with the multidisciplinary healthcare team

Work within the scope of practice of a midwifery student at this phase and recognise own level of knowledge and professional behaviours

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as Registered General Nurse and Student Midwife Candidate is required

Students must successfully complete NMHS32990 Clinical Practice B (HDM) they are permitted to attend the clinical site for clinical placement for this module.

The placement is assessed by clinical preceptors using a clinical assessment documents over a 12 week period. 'Week' means the standard working week in hours, being applied to students of midwifery by their health care institution at any given time during the programme (NMBI, 2017).

This module is delivered over more than one trimester (UCD Academic Regulations 2019-2020, Section 3.5).

This module is part of the essential clinical requirements for professional registration. The student must pass all three individual clinical placements and complete all clinical time associated with that placement before a pass grade can be awarded for the module.

The student must maintain a record of their clinical experiences as outlined by EU Directive 2005/36/EC and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (2016).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students are provided both formal and informal feedback by their preceptors at intervals throughout the clinical placement. Where a student is having significant difficulties in meeting standards during a clinical placement or, where a student is unsuccessful in their clinical assessment then a protocol is enacted. This protocol outlines the events and actions that should take place in these circumstances and this includes details relating to providing feedback.
