This module aims to provide registered general nurses with the knowledge, skills, and clinical competence to practice safely and competently within their scope of practice in the area of specialist oncology and chemotherapy nursing practice. The module is underpinned by national standards including the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the student will:
1. Develop and extend their specialist knowledge of typical oncology conditions and the aetiological factors which contribute to the development of these pathophysiological processes.
2. Demonstrate the ability to safely and effectively, assess, plan, implement and evaluate a plan of care for the patient with a cancer diagnosis drawing upon best available evidence.
3. Demonstrate the ability to safely administer and handle chemotherapy drugs to ensure the safety of patients, carers and the environment.
4. Discuss key oncological emergencies, disease and treatment related complications and the management of adverse effects and toxicities.
5. Explore the physical, social, spiritual and psychological needs of patients and families with cancer and how these are assessed and managed by the multi-disciplinary team.

Learning Requirements:

The Oncology and Chemotherapy CPD programme is open to nurses currently registered with NMBI in the general division with a minimum of six (6) months of recent post-registration clinical practice. The nurse must be employed in the oncology department of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and have access to a designated chemotherapy setting to undertake the relevant supervised clinical practice. The nurse must have satisfactorily completed the MMUH’s Preparation and Administration of Intravenous Medications Competence Assessment. Students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours clinical experience within the Oncology Department per month with a minimum clinical exposure of 80% of individual clinical allocation for the duration of the CPD module (14 weeks).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students shall receive feedback on all assessments associated with the Oncology and Chemotherapy CPD Programme. The purpose of feedback is the promotion of learning for the student. Feedback should be clear, understandable and be structured around goals, criteria and standards. Feedback can be in oral or written form, formal or informal. Students are responsible for engaging with feedback and applying consideration to the feedback given on their work. Feedback shall be given no later than twenty working days after the deadline for assessment submission, except work that is submitted late.
