The CPD in Care of the Older Person is designed to provide the participant with the core nursing skills required to care safely, professionally, holistically and therapeutically for the older patient. On course completion, the participant will be able to recognise the need for and execute person-centred care being cognisant of patient safety, ethical issues and professional accountability.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Examine the normal physiological factors of aging and their relationship with altered health in the context of patient care

2. Identify and support the needs of the older person presenting with delirium, dementia and depression using validated screening tools to implement person-centred, evidence-based care

3. Outline and provide appropriate, ethical and safe nursing care for the frail older adult with sensory and/or cognitive impairment and general functional decline

4. Organise a comprehensive, integrated approach in dealing with the age-related issues of co-morbidities; end of life-care; responsive behaviours and poly-pharmacy

5. Implement nurse facilitated discharge planning for long term residential care, rehabilitation or community based care in conjunction with the Care of the Older Person MDT

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be Registered General Nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
• Must be employed at St. Vincent's University Hospital
• Must be working in one of these four areas in St. Vincent’s University Hospital for the duration of the course, Our Lady’s Ward, Caritas Transitional Care Unit (TCU), St. Agnes Ward, Carew House or a medical as deemed appropriate by the ADON

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Course Coordinator gives feedforward by providing suggestions and guidelines for the participant on how to complete the final assessments. Participants receive individual feedback on their progress and academic work. Participants are encouraged to seek additional feedback for grades that are in dispute. In the event that the outcome of this feedback is unsatisfactory, the participant may request additional feedback with the Director of Nurse Education and Practice Development (DONE&PD), in the Nurse Education Centre.
