NMHS32880 CPD Perioperative Nursing

Academic Year 2024/2025

The CPD in Perioperative Nursing is designed to provide the participant with the core nursing skills required to safely, professionally and holistically care for patients in Anaesthetics, Surgery and PACU. On course completion, the participant will be able to demonstrate her/his role in relation to patient-centeredness, patient safety, professional accountability and the need for accurate communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and their families.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

1.Assess and manage effectively the preparation of the patient for theatre

2.Assess and manage the patient in the intraoperative and post- operative phase

3.Engage in the safe preparation, checking, use and management of equipment in the perioperative environment.

4. Demonstrate the ability to perform basic airway management and effectively assist the anaesthetist in the holistic care of the perioperative patient.

5.Apply the principles of asepsis and infection prevention and control in the perioperative environment for optimal patient care.

6.Position patients safely by utilising the appropriate equipment

7.Interpret the cardiovascular parameters and assist the anaesthetist in the management of patient circulation during anaesthesia and in the post anaesthetic care unit (PACU).

Learning Requirements:

 Must be Registered General Nurses with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland
 Must be employed at St. Vincent’s University Hospital
 Must be working in the theatre department for the duration of the course ,employed in a full time capacity (1 WTE)
 Must have access to a personal computer or laptop
 Must have basic information and communication technology (ICT) skills
