NMHS32870 CPD in Cancer Care Nursing

Academic Year 2024/2025

The CPD in Cancer Nursing is designed to provide the participant with the core nursing skills required to safely, professionally and holistically care for patients with cancer. On course completion, the participant will be able to demonstrate her/his role in relation to patient-centeredness, patient safety, professional accountability and the need for accurate communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and their families.

Learning Outcomes:

1. To practice safely and therapeutically with patients receiving a cancer diagnosis and undergoing diagnostic investigations for cancer
2. Perform accurate nursing assessment of the patient with cancer and develop an appropriate plan of care
3. Plan and manage effectively the care of patients receiving chemotherapy
4. Establish effective nursing care using an evidenced based framework for patients experiencing oncology emergencies
5. Implement care safely and effectively for patients pre and post autologous transplant
6. Demonstrate competency in the assessment and management of central venous access devices for the patient with cancer
7. Plan and manage effectively the patient receiving end of life nursing care

 Must be Registered General Nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland
 Must be employed at St. Vincent's University Hospital
 Must be working in a cancer care setting
 Must have access to a personal computer or laptop

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The Course Coordinator gives feedforward by providing suggestions and guidelines for the participant on how to complete the final assessments. Participants receive individual feedback on their progress and academic work. Participants are encouraged to seek additional feedback for grades that are in dispute. In the event that the outcome of this feedback is unsatisfactory, the participant may request additional feedback with the Director of Nurse Education and Practice Development (DONE&PD), in the Nurse Education Centre.
