The module is designed to provide students with a foundational level of specialist knowledge, skills and competence for entry into the emergency nursing practice setting. With an emphasis on essential theoretical knowledge that underpins evidence based care and clinical nursing skills; the module focuses on the nursing care of patients with minor and major injuries in the emergency department practice setting. The module also aims to facilitate the student in their continued professional development with emphasis on patient centred care, patient safety and professional accountability.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the student will:
1. Outline the aims of the National Clinical Programme for Emergency Medicine and distinguish the implications for improvement in patient safety, quality of care and reduction in waiting times for patients in Emergency Departments (EDs).
2. Demonstrate their ability to provide effect and competent nursing care while integrating theoretical knowledge for patients experiencing major illnesses.
3. Demonstrate their ability to provide effect and competent nursing care while integrating theoretical knowledge for patients experiencing minor injuries.
4. Distinguish patients who have particular or complex emergency care needs and communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary care team, primary care services and the family/carers.
5. Demonstrate the ability to practice within a framework of professional accountability and responsibility underpinned by legislation, professional regulation and guidelines within the limits of his/her own scope of practice.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Registered General Nurse with minimum 6 months recent clinical practice experience in the emergency department environment. Students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours clinical experience within the Emergency Department per month for the duration of the CPD module (24 weeks).
