This aim of this clinical professional development module programme is to augment the nurse’s knowledge, skills and attitudes required to effectively and safely care for the child with a cardiac condition and his/her family in the Children’s Heart Centre.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the programme, the participant will be able to:
• Develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of common cardiac conditions affecting children.
• Demonstrate mastery of admission and discharge of a child to the Children’s Heart Centre.
• Exercise appropriate judgement in assessment, planning and delivering nursing care of a child with common cardiac conditions, altered cardio-respiratory function, altered nutritional requirements and altered thermoregulation.
• Exercise appropriate judgement in assessment, planning and delivering nursing care of a child undergoing cardiac surgery.
• Provide detailed knowledge and understanding of the psychosocial effects of cardiac conditions on children and their families.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Registered nurses with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland
• Deemed suitable to undertake the programme by their Clinical Nurse Manager/ Clinical Nurse Facilitator
• Nurses employed in CHC for a minimum of 16 weeks before commencing the programme.
• Nurse must have successfully completed their individual orientation, preceptorship period and Intravenous Therapy Management in Children competence assessment.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Participants receive individual feedback on their progress and academic work. If a learner has any concerns about their grades, requests for additional feedback should be made in writing to the nurse tutor in the CCNE within two weeks of publication of results. Clinical assessments: The purpose of assessment in this programme is to give structured feedback to learners and capture what they have learnt, understood and will apply to their nursing practice.
