NMHS32810 Cardiac, Thoracic and Heart/Lung Transplantation Nursing CPD

This module is designed to enhance students’ professional knowledge and clinical practice skills in their role in the specialist practice areas of Cardiac, Thoracic and Heart/Lung Transplantation (CTHLT) Nursing. The module aims to facilitate the student to examine the evidence that underpins specialist nursing practice comprising of both theoretical and clinical nursing components and integrate this professional knowledge into clinical nursing care. This module also aims to facilitate the student in their continued professional development with emphasis on patient-centeredness, patient safety, professional accountability and the further development of effective communication with the patient, their families and the multi-disciplinary team.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, the student will be able to:
1. Extend prior knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the heart and lungs, and risk factors of cardiovascular and lung dysfunction.
2. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the theory underpinning (CTHLT) nursing and apply this knowledge to the holistic nursing care of persons requiring: (1) cardiac surgery (2) lung surgery (3) heart/lung transplantation.
3. Utilising a systematic framework, distinguish and evaluate the nursing management of patients in relation to: (1) cardiac surgery (2) lung surgery (3) heart/lung transplantation.
4. Analyse and apply the evidence-based patient education for patients experiencing cardiac/ thoracic surgery and heart/lung transplantation.
5. Utilise the principles of effective communication, patient safety and professional accountably in the provision of patient centred care.

Indicative Module Content:

Evidence-based approaches (medical and nursing) related to the physical and psychosocial care of patients experiencing cardiac/ thoracic surgery and heart/lung transplantation including therapeutic modalities.

Learning Requirements:

Registered General Nurse with a minimum of 6 months recent clinical practice experience. Students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours per month of clinical practice experience over the duration of the module (24 weeks).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students shall receive feedback on all assessments associated with the Cardiac, Thoracic and Heart/Lung Transplantation Nursing CPD programme. The purpose of feedback is the promotion of learning for the student. Feedback should be clear, understandable and be structured around goals, criteria and standards. Feedback can be in oral or written form, formal or informal. Students are responsible for engaging with feedback and applying consideration to the feedback given on their work. Feedback shall be given no later than twenty working days after the deadline for assessment submission, except work that is submitted late.
