This module provides healthcare professionals engaged in clinical practice with greater knowledge and understanding of themselves and others to improve their effectiveness within their respective professions. In this regard professional development refers to skills, knowledge and attitudes attained for both personal improvement and career development. This will include learning more about their own preferences to better understand themselves and appreciate difference. The module will address relevant theories to underpin skills development in areas such as conflict resolution, managing stress, giving & receiving feedback, and effective teamwork. An exploration of concepts and techniques pertaining to quality improvement will also be provided. Finally, issues pertaining to understanding their role and contribution within the local organisation and the national health service structure in general will be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes: On completion the student will be able to:
• Analyse their preferred role-type(s) when working within a team.
• Describe a variety of team roles when undertaking projects/group work.
• Discuss ways to manage conflict and providing constructive feedback to colleagues.
• Analyse some theoretical perspectives on managing stress.
• Describe the broad structure of the Irish health service.
• Discuss how national policy translates into organisational goals and employee roles.
• Examine the challenges of implementation of a Quality Improvement initiative within his / her own area

Indicative Module Content:

The programme addresses relevant theories to underpin skills development in areas such as conflict resolution, managing stress, giving and receiving feedback and effective teamwork.
An exploration of concepts and techniques pertaining to quality improvement will also be provided.
Finally, issues pertaining to understanding an individual’s role and contribution within the organisation and the national health service structure in general is also explored.
