NMHS32720 Acute Mental Health Nursing

Academic Year 2023/2024

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the concept of acute mental healthcare. The focus of this module will be on the care and treatments available within inpatient and community services for those experiencing an acute form of a mental health difficulty. Students will also become more familiar with mental health difficulties such as affective disorders, personality vulnerability and psychoses (with special focus on first episode psychosis and health monitoring). Interactions with substance misuse disorders and the particular care needs of specific client groups such as homeless persons and those with autistic spectrum disorders will also be explored in the context of this module. Clinical skills laboratory work will focus on the skills required to care for someone experiencing an acute mental health difficulty.
