This module provides students with the theoretical foundation for critical care nursing practice. It aims to facilitate students' understanding of the principles of homeostatic maintenance, including acid-base balance, fluid and electrolyte balance, mechanical invasive and non-invasive ventilation, pharmacology, and haemodynamic monitoring. This module will also explore the concept of person-centred care in the ICU.


About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Build on foundational knowledge of applied clinical physiology.
2. Demonstrate the ability to analyse normal variations and abnormal patient assessment findings.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the core principles that underpin the nursing management of a person requiring mechanical ventilation.
4. Discuss the best evidence-based practice that underpins the nursing care of the patients for whom they provide care
5. Discuss the principles of person-centred care in the ICU.
