This module is designed to facilitate the learning of essential clinical skills and the attainment of standards related to the domains of competence assessment framework. The student is facilitated to care for the patient on a full time rotational basis. In particular emphasis is given to exposing the student to a 24-hours range of care and offering the student the opportunity to become fully immersed as a full time team member in the provision of care. Students will be given opportunities to apply the skills of critical analysis, problem solving, decision making and reflection. Students will be given an opportunity to manage the clinical area and to complete a management exercise, under the supervision of a registered nurse.Clinical placements are also designed to facilitate the integration of knowledge and practice across the division of general nursing. The module is part of the essential clinical requirements for professional registration. The credit load of the module reflects the student effort hours required to achieve the learning outcomes.
Students must successfully complete specified Stage 4 supernumerary clinical modules before undertaking the internship clinical modules.
Students must successfully complete Level 1 DoCAT/NCAD internship modules before undertaking Level 2 DoCAT/NCAD. Students must successfully complete Level 1 & 2 DoCAT/NCAD in each registration strand on internship modules before they can undertake Level 1 & 2 NCAD/DoCAT in the next registration strand.
Students must present evidence of completed clinical time for all clinical placements in Stage 4 and 4.5 before a pass grade can be awarded for internship modules 4B and 4D.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able act as a members of the health care team and demonstrate the development of competence in the following domains: Domains 1-5- Professional/Ethical Practice in relation to the care of children, adults and families in a medical-surgical setting Holistic Approaches to Care and Integration of Knowledge in a medical-surgical settingInterpersonal Relationships with patients, family and other professionalsOrganisation and Management of Care in a medical-surgical settingPersonal and Professional Development. Domain 6: Students must present evidence of completed clinical time for all clinical placements in stage 4/4.5.

Learning Requirements:
