The module is designed to provide students with the specialist theoretical and practice skills to work effectively in the acute medical practice setting. With a strong clinical focus, the module aims to advance the student’s patient assessment skills and specialist nursing management for the care of the patient with acute medical needs. Integrating the advancement of patient assessment skills and specialist theoretical knowledge underpinned by evidence-based care of patients with acute medical health conditions, the module also aims to enhance specialist nursing practice and further develop the nurse’s professional role in the developing specialty of the acute medical patient.

Learning Outcomes:

Indicative Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module the student will:
• Examine the aims of the National Clinical Programme for Acute Medicine and integrate into professional patient centred care utilising the principles of effective communication, patient safety and professional accountably to meet these aims.
• Further develop and extend their specialist theoretical knowledge related to a broad range of acute medical health alterations and critically examine the related evidence-based nursing care.
• Advance their ability to conduct a systematic and focused nursing assessment of the patient with acute medical needs, identify priority patient problems and devise a patient specific nursing care plan to meet their needs effectively incorporating evidence-based care pathways.
• Recognise acute changes in the condition of the patient with acute medical needs and respond appropriately in the delivery of holistic nursing care whilst working as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
• Distinguish the key components of integrated discharge planning for patients experiencing acute medical health alterations and develop a patient specific discharge care plan incorporating liaison with the multi- disciplinary team.

Learning Requirements:

Registered General Nurse with minimum 4 months recent clinical practice experience in the acute medical environment. Students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours clinical experience within the acute medical unit per month for the duration of the CPD module (20 weeks).

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students shall receive feedback on all assessments associated with the CPD programme. The purpose of feedback is the promotion of learning for the student. Feedback should be clear, understandable and be structured around goals, criteria and standards. Feedback can be in oral or written form, formal or informal. Students are responsible for engaging with feedback and applying consideration to the feedback given on their work. Feedback shall be given no later than twenty working days after the deadline for assessment submission, except work that is submitted late.
