NMHS30280 Teaching and Assessing in the Practicum

Academic Year 2020/2021

This module aims to deepen students understanding of teaching and learning in nursing and midwifery practice and prepare them for their role as registered nurses and practice educators. Students will gain an understanding of competence based assessment and the role of the preceptor within the clinical learning environment. The module provides the student with material to develop new knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the processes of teaching, facilitating learning and assessing learning in clinical practice.
Formative learning in this module comprises an online preparation for preceptor programme. Submission and grading of the assignment for this module is conditional on completion of the HSEland online programme.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Identify the nature of human knowing and the principal domains of human learning.
2. Explore and analyse critically the role of the teacher/facilitator in facilitating learning.
3. Discuss the principles and practice of facilitating learning in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains of human learning.
4. Explore and critically analyse the factors that facilitate and inhibit learning, including learner factors, teacher factors, environmental factors and contextual factors.
5. Explore the concept of preceptorship and its’ application in nursing and midwifery practice.
6. Discuss the role of assessment in the teaching-learning process and examine strategies for the assessment of learning.
7. Discuss strategies for dealing with difficulties in the teaching, learning and assessment process in clinical practice.
8. Reflect on how they learn and how they can identify and address their own learning needs now, and in their future careers.
